The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign that commences on 25 November,
the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs until 10 December, Human Rights Day.

• More than five women or girls are killed every hour by someone in their own family.
• Almost one in three women have been subjected to physical and/or sexual violence at least once in their life.
• 86% of women and girls live in countries without legal protections against gender-based violence.

The United Nations Secretary-General launched in 2008 the campaign UNITE by 2030 to End Violence against Women, which runs parallel to the 16 Days of Activism.

Every year, the UNITE Campaign focuses on a specific theme and this year’s is “UNITE! Invest to prevent violence against women and girls”.

Los 16 Días de Activismo contra la Violencia de Género son una campaña internacional anual que comienza el 25 de noviembre, Día Internacional de la Eliminación de la Violencia contra la Mujer, y se extiende hasta el 10 de diciembre, Día de los Derechos Humanos.

Más de cinco mujeres o niñas son asesinadas cada hora por alguien de su propia familia.
Casi una de cada tres mujeres ha sufrido violencia física y/o sexual al menos una vez en su vida.
El 86% de las mujeres y niñas viven en países sin protección jurídica contra la violencia de género.

El Secretario General de las Naciones Unidas lanzó en 2008 la campaña ÚNETE para poner fin a la violencia contra las mujeres de aquí a 2030, que corre paralela a los 16 Días de Activismo.

Cada año, la campaña ÚNETE se centra en un tema específico y el de este año es “¡ÚNETE! Invierte para prevenir la violencia contra las mujeres y las niñas”.

Pope Francis has released a video message to appeal for peace in the Holy Land and Ukraine, praying that wars might be resolved through dialogue rather than a mountain of casualties.

The Pope’s video message was accompanied by a press release from the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network, which invites people to take part in a novena.

The “Peacemakers” novena seeks to unite Christians in praying for “peace in the world, and for the Holy Land, Palestine and Israel.”

El Papa Francisco ha publicado un videomensaje para hacer un llamamiento a la paz en Tierra Santa y Ucrania, rezando para que las guerras se resuelvan mediante el diálogo y no con una montaña de víctimas.

El mensaje de vídeo del Papa iba acompañado de un comunicado de prensa de la Red Mundial de Oración del Papa, que invita a participar en una novena.

La novena “Pacificadores” pretende unir a los cristianos en la oración por “la paz en el mundo, y por Tierra Santa, Palestina e Israel”.

On November 23, 2023 the Lionel Kelland Hospice will be officially opened in Grand Falls-Windsor.  The hospice is a community project created through the generosity of many people, especially the Presentation Sisters, who have been working closely with the organizing committee for almost ten years.   The Sisters donated their St. Catherine’s Renewal Centre property which has been renovated to accommodate a ten-bed hospice with beautiful space for the families and those caring for the patients.

The Sisters of Mercy have been given the privilege to name one of the wings.  The west wing will be named after Sr. Mary Fabian Hennebury who established in 1979 the first palliative care unit at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital in St. John’s. We are delighted that a wing of the hospice will be named after Sr. Mary Fabian!

Sisters Elizabeth Marrie and Patricia March will attend the grand opening ceremonies in Grand Falls-Windsor.

We congratulate the Presentation Sisters, the people, supporters and planning committee for their persistence that has brought them to this day.  We applaud the Presentation Sisters’ generous donation and their faithful commitment to the completion of the project.  We celebrate with the people of the Central area of our province that they will have a program and place where they can accompany their loved ones in their final journey in life.  We celebrate that the residents of the area will find in the Lionel Kelland Hospice a place of love, care, comfort and support that they need in the face of sickness and death.

El 23 de noviembre de 2023 se inaugurará oficialmente el hospicio Lionel Kelland en Grand Falls-Windsor. El hospicio es un proyecto comunitario creado gracias a la generosidad de muchas personas, especialmente de las Hermanas de la Presentación, que llevan casi diez años colaborando estrechamente con el comité organizador. Las Hermanas donaron su propiedad St. Catherine’s Renewal Centre, que ha sido renovada para albergar un hospicio de diez camas con un hermoso espacio para las familias y quienes cuidan a los pacientes.

Las Hermanas de la Misericordia han tenido el privilegio de dar nombre a una de las alas. El ala oeste llevará el nombre de la Hna. Mary Fabian Hennebury, que en 1979 creó la primera unidad de cuidados paliativos en el hospital St. Clare’s Mercy de St. Estamos encantados de que un ala del hospicio lleve el nombre de la Hna. Mary Fabian.

Felicitamos a las Hermanas de la Presentación, al pueblo, a los simpatizantes y al comité de planificación por su persistencia, que les ha llevado hasta este día. COP 28, the 28^th Conference of the Parties will take place from November 30 to December 12 in Dubai, United Arab Emirate. The conference will begin by delivering the first-ever Global Stocktake, a comprehensive evaluation or report card of how the global community has done with regard to the climate goals articulated at the 2015 Paris Agreement.

This Global Stocktake will take a hard look at where countries and stakeholders are making progress towards meeting these goals and where they are not. It will identify opportunities and challenges, with the aim of charting a better course for all parties to accelerate progress in carrying forward these climate goals.

In a letter to the parties in July 2023, the incoming president of COP28, Sultan Al Jaber, announced that the conference would focus on four key areas:

• Fast-tracking the energy transition and slashing emissions before 2030
• Transforming climate finance by delivering on old promises and setting the framework for a new deal on finance
• Putting nature, people, lives and livelihoods at the heart of climate action
• Mobilizing for the most inclusive COP ever

In pre-conference talks held in in Abu Dhabi in late October, the President-designate called for global unity and urgent climate action at COP28. He urged countries to seek “common ground” in an effort to resolve disagreements over the future of fossil fuels, as countries are strongly divided on this issue as well as on the issue of the “Loss and Damage Fund” for countries most severely affected by the ravages of climate change.

A UN Climate Press Release on November 14 stated that national climate- change action plans are still not sufficient to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius and meet the goals of the Paris Agreement. The Executive Secretary of UN Climate Change said that governments need to take bold steps to get on track. He stated very clearly: “This means COP28 must be a clear turning point.  Governments must not only agree what stronger climate actions will be taken, but also start showing exactly how to deliver them.”

Pope Francis at COP28

Pope Francis will be participating in COP28 in Dubai from December 1-3, an unprecedented event in COP history. He is scheduled to address conference participants on December 2 and will hold several bilateral meetings as well.  On Sunday, December 3 he will inaugurate the Faith Pavilion, the Holy See’s pavilion, focusing on the themes of fraternity and interconnectedness of cultures. This Pavilion, designed to convey a message of peace to the world, is hosted by the Muslim Council of Elders in collaboration with the COP28 presidency, the Holy See, a coalition of faith partners and the UN Environmental Program.

La COP 28, la 28ª Conferencia de las Partes, se celebrará del 30 de noviembre al 12 de diciembre en Dubái (Emiratos Árabes Unidos). La conferencia se iniciará con la presentación del primer Balance Global, una evaluación exhaustiva o boletín de calificaciones de los resultados obtenidos por la comunidad mundial en relación con los objetivos climáticos articulados en el Acuerdo de París de 2015.

Este Balance Mundial analizará en profundidad en qué ámbitos los países y las partes interesadas están avanzando hacia el cumplimiento de estos objetivos y en cuáles no. Se identificarán las oportunidades y los retos, con el objetivo de trazar un mejor camino para que todas las partes aceleren el progreso en la consecución de estos objetivos climáticos.

En una carta dirigida a las partes en julio de 2023, el presidente entrante de la COP28, Sultan Al Jaber, anunció que la conferencia se centraría en cuatro áreas clave:

• Acelerar la transición energética y reducir las emisiones antes de 2030.
• Transformar la financiación de la lucha contra el cambio climático cumpliendo las viejas promesas y estableciendo el marco para un nuevo acuerdo financiero
• Situar la naturaleza, las personas, las vidas y los medios de subsistencia en el centro de la acción climática.
• Movilización para lograr la COP más inclusiva de la historia

En las conversaciones previas a la conferencia celebradas en Abu Dhabi a finales de octubre, el Presidente designado hizo un llamamiento a la unidad mundial y a la acción climática urgente en la COP28. Instó a los países a buscar un “terreno común” en un esfuerzo por resolver los desacuerdos sobre el futuro de los combustibles fósiles, ya que los países están muy divididos en esta cuestión, así como en el tema del “Fondo para pérdidas y daños” para los países más gravemente afectados por los estragos del cambio climático.

En un comunicado de prensa de la ONU sobre el clima del 14 de noviembre se afirmaba que los planes de acción nacionales sobre el cambio climático aún no son suficientes para limitar el aumento de la temperatura mundial a 1,5 grados centígrados y cumplir los objetivos del Acuerdo de París. El Secretario Ejecutivo de ONU Cambio Climático afirmó que los gobiernos deben tomar medidas audaces para ponerse en marcha. Lo dijo muy claramente: “Esto significa que la COP28 debe ser un claro punto de inflexión. Los gobiernos no sólo deben acordar qué medidas climáticas más contundentes se adoptarán, sino que también deben empezar a mostrar exactamente cómo llevarlas a cabo.”

Recemos por todos los implicados en estos debates de alto nivel que tendrán repercusiones duraderas en nuestro futuro como comunidad mundial.

El Papa Francisco en la COP28

El Papa Francisco participará en la COP28 en Dubai del 1 al 3 de diciembre, un acontecimiento sin precedentes en la historia de la COP. Está previsto que se dirija a los participantes en la conferencia el 2 de diciembre y que mantenga también varias reuniones bilaterales. El domingo 3 de diciembre inaugurará el Pabellón de la Fe, el pabellón de la Santa Sede, centrado en los temas de la fraternidad y la interconexión de las culturas. Este pabellón, diseñado para transmitir un mensaje de paz al mundo, está organizado por el Consejo Musulmán de Ancianos en colaboración con la presidencia de la COP28, la Santa Sede, una coalición de socios religiosos y el Programa de las Naciones Unidas para el Medio Ambiente.

World Day of the Poor was established in 2016 by Pope Francis in his Apostolic Letter Misericordia et Misera at the closing of the Jubilee Year of Mercy. He asked the whole Church to observe this special day on the 33^rd Sunday of Ordinary Time as an opportunity to “renew the face of the Church as she perseveres in her perennial activity of pastoral conversion and witness to mercy.”

This seventh World Day of the Poor has as its theme “Do not turn your face away from anyone who is poor.” (Tobit 4:7)                                                           

Pope Francis begins his message for the Day by stressing that “a great river of poverty is traversing our cities and swelling to the point of overflowing; it seems to overwhelm us, so great are the needs of our brothers and sisters who plead for our help, support and solidarity.”

La Jornada Mundial de los Pobres fue instaurada en 2016 por el Papa Francisco en su Carta Apostólica Misericordia et Misera en la clausura del Año Jubilar de la Misericordia. Pidió a toda la Iglesia que observara este día especial en el 33º domingo del Tiempo Ordinario como una oportunidad para “renovar el rostro de la Iglesia mientras persevera en su perenne actividad de conversión pastoral y testimonio de la misericordia.”

Esta séptima Jornada Mundial de los Pobres tiene como lema “No vuelvas tu rostro a nadie que sea pobre”. (Tobías 4, 7)

El Papa Francisco comienza su mensaje para la Jornada subrayando que “un gran río de pobreza atraviesa nuestras ciudades y se hincha hasta desbordarse; parece desbordarnos, tan grandes son las necesidades de nuestros hermanos y hermanas que suplican nuestra ayuda, apoyo y solidaridad.”

Each year on November 11 Canada celebrates Remembrance Day, originally called Armistice Day. This day provides Canadians an opportunity to remember all the women and men who have served and continue to serve our country in times of war and in peace time.

We  are grateful for their sacrifices and we ask God’s blessing on all who work to bring about peace and justice in our world.

El 11 de noviembre de cada año se celebra en Canadá el Día del Recuerdo, originalmente llamado Día del Armisticio. Este día brinda a los canadienses la oportunidad de recordar a todos los hombres y mujeres que han servido y siguen sirviendo a nuestro país en tiempos de guerra y en tiempos de paz.

Agradecemos sus sacrificios y pedimos la bendición de Dios para todos los que trabajan por la paz y la justicia en nuestro mundo.

On this day in 1841 Catherine McAuley, our beloved foundress, died at Baggot Street in Dublin. That morning Father Redmond O’Hanlon celebrated Mass in her infirmary room. where sisters from the house and from the nearby areas joined her on this last journey.  Among those present at her deathbed was our Newfoundland foundress, Francis Creedon, who had been professed in August of that year.

On this, her last day on earth, Catherine spoke with each sister individually, giving each “her blessing and a parting advice” as noted by Sister Mary Sullivan. Her brother James, his wife and two young daughters visited in the afternoon, as did several of Catherine’s priest friends. All day long the sisters kept vigil until her death just before 8:00 pm.  The following morning Sister M. Ursula Frayne sent a brief announcement of her death to the foundations outside of Dublin.

We thank God for the life and legacy of this woman of God! May her spirit continue to inspire us and call us to become channels of Mercy in our day!

En este día de 1841 Catherine McAuley, nuestra querida fundadora, murió en la calle Baggot de Dublín. Esa mañana, el padre Redmond O’Hanlon celebró la misa en la enfermería, donde las hermanas de la casa y de los alrededores la acompañaron en su último viaje. Entre los presentes en su lecho de muerte estaba nuestra fundadora de Terranova, Francis Creedon, que había profesado en agosto de ese año.

En este, su último día en la tierra, Catalina habló con cada hermana individualmente, dándoles a cada una “su bendición y un consejo de despedida” como señaló la Hermana Mary Sullivan. Su hermano James, su mujer y sus dos hijas pequeñas la visitaron por la tarde, al igual que varios sacerdotes amigos de Catalina. Durante todo el día, las hermanas velaron a Catherine hasta su muerte, poco antes de las 8 de la tarde. A la mañana siguiente, la hermana M. Ursula Frayne envió un breve anuncio de su muerte a las fundaciones de las afueras de Dublín.

Damos gracias a Dios por la vida y el legado de esta mujer de Dios. Que su espíritu siga inspirándonos y llamándonos a ser canales de Misericordia en nuestros días.
