Seeds of Mercy Retreat, September 5-7, 2025

For the past five years an important part of our Mercy Associate ministry has been a yearly weekend Retreat which is held in September. We rent a house in a community which can accommodate eight to ten people. We use our private vehicles and travel as a group.

From 2021 to 2025 we have held our retreats in the following communities in Newfoundland and Labrador:

2021 –Woody Point

2022 –Herring Neck

2023 –West Bottom

2024 –Cox’s Cove

2025 –Tilting, Fogo Island

This year, September 2025, 8 (eight) of our associates attended the retreat (one associate came from Deer Lake and one from St. John’s). We arrived at the community of Farewell at 10:30 a.m. to catch the ferry to Fogo Island. It was a beautiful day, and we very much enjoyed the ferry ride. Upon arrival we went to the famous Fogo Island Inn, where we had scheduled a tour. We enjoyed the tour and our tour guide was wonderful. Associate Geraldine Drover then gave us a tour of the community of Tilting, which was her hometown. After settling at the B&B we rented, we enjoyed a relaxing meal. We had prepared all our meals beforehand. Then we had a delightful evening of fellowship after an adventurous and full day.

We began Saturday by gathering for brunch; and then prepared ourselves for the Spiritual Program that was to follow. The Retreat was facilitated by our Mercy Associate, Sarah Mercer. The chosen theme was “Mercy”. Discussion focused on how we can show mercy to others in our lives and how we can be instruments of mercy to our family, our parish and our community at large. Our afternoon retreat ended with attending Mass in the community of Joe Batt’s Arm. The choir and parish priest appreciated our participation with the singing. We certainly felt the presence of the Holy Spirit in our group.

God works in strange ways! In mingling with some parishioners after Mass, we discovered that the choir leader had roots in the community of Coachman’s Cove – which is a small community near our home, Baie Verte. She was related to one of our associates and they had never met. What a blessing! What a beautiful union it was! We believe this was one of God’s miracles to us!

Once back at the B&B, we enjoyed another lovely meal together. The evening brought laughter and relaxation. It was quite a day! Sunday morning was a flurry of activity as we headed home. Geraldine Drover was off to St. John’s, Anna Hoven to Deer Lake and the rest of us to Baie Verte.

It was a fantastic weekend of “God is Good”! We are already anxiously awaiting and planning next year’s retreat!  Amen!

Retreat: Hope, the Call of the Associates

On Saturday May 10 more than fifty associates of three religious congregations – Mercy, Presentation and Redemptorist – gathered in the Recreation Hall at Littledale for retreat.  Anne Walsh facilitated the day, using the theme: Hope, the Call of the Associates, with a focus on associates as missionaries of hope to one another and to the world.

“Come to me all you who are weary and I will give you rest. Take my yoke you and learn from Me …” (Matthew 11:28-30) provided a reflective entry into the retreat. Times of prayer, silent reflection, table discussion and a shared meal  made the day very meaningful, enriching and hope-filled for all participants.

The associates wish to express their deep gratitude to Ms. Anne Walsh, Ms. Barbara Hawley, Sister Sandy Butler, Ms. Deirdre Greene Lono and Sister Maureen O’Keefe and all who assisted in making the day such a wonderful experience of prayer, mutual support and community building. An added delight to the day was the availability of a newly installed kitchenette in the Recreation Hall.

Associates and Sisters Celebrate 30th Anniversary

On Saturday, 27 April 2024 about fifty sisters and associates gathered in the Recreation Hall to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the associate relationship.

After a welcome by Sisters Maureen O’Keefe, co-coordinator of the associates and Diane Smyth, Congregational Leader, Sr. Monica Hickey presented a brief history of the founding of the associate relationship in Newfoundland.  With song and prayer the associates re-committed themselves in Mercy, remembered associates who had died, and celebrated their 30th anniversary with cake and refreshments.

Three Associates Make Commitment

MERCY ASSOCIATE COMMITMENT CEREMONY

February 13, 2011

Article contributed by Sr. Maureen O’Keefe

On Sunday afternoon, February 13, 2011 Mercy Convent Chapel was the setting for a rich experience of how God continues to grace our Mercy Congregation. Pews and Prie-Dieu were filled to capacity with Sisters, Associates and family members, gathered to welcome new Associates into the Mercy Associate Relationship. In a beautiful Prayer/Ritual led by their facilitators, Sisters Margie Taylor and Madeline Byrne, three women – Mickie Pitcher, Marilyn Stack and Geraldine (Gerri) Stapleton made their commitment as Mercy Associates
Sister Elizabeth Davis, Congregation Leader, welcomed the new Associates, received their commitments and presented them with their Associate pins and Certificates. Husbands and other family members were present to participate in the ceremony and share in the joy of their loved ones as they entered upon another significant phase in their spiritual journey.
The sentiments of all Associates present were echoed in the words of Associate, Anna Kelly in her reflection, “What Being a Mercy Associate Means to Me.” Anna spoke of their Associate meetings as “ time for prayer, sharing, showing support and concern for each other, having time to develop new friendships and of course, enjoying a story and a few laughs as they share that ‘comfortable cup of tea’ at the end of the meeting.” She noted that each Associate brings to the group their own gifts and talents that enable them to companion with the Sisters of Mercy to carry on Catherine McAuley’s charism, to bring the Mercy of God to those in need. At the same time, Associates deepen their own Baptismal commitment to live more fully the values of the Gospel.
A spirit of joy and gratitude flowed from the chapel to the Fleming Room where friendship and fun were shared over the rim of that traditional tea cup!
Thousands of thanks and praises
To His Holy Name.
