World Refugee Day is an international day designated by the United Nations to honour refugees around the globe. It falls each year on 20 June and honours the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home country to escape conflict or persecution. One in every 70 people, or 1.4 per cent of the entire world’s population, is now forcibly displaced

World Refugee Day was held globally for the first time on 20 June 2001 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees. Throughout 2026, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is embarking on a series of national, regional, and global dialogues to mark the 75th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention.

At the end of 2025, there were 41.6 million refugees with 5.4 million people were forced to flee and seek safety in other countries during 2025.

An idea to create a personalized library for West Coast Correctional Centre’s own Sister Rona (Pastoral Care) recently came to fruition through the hard work and dedication of both staff and offenders.

For the past 25 years, Sister Rona has played an integral role in supporting the rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders as they prepare to return to our communities. Her compassion, guidance, and unwavering commitment have positively impacted countless individuals over the years.

Sister Rona is highly respected by both staff and offenders alike, and her contributions do not go unnoticed. This library is a small token of appreciation for her years of dedicated service and the difference she continues to make every day.

Thank you, Sister Rona, for 25 years of outstanding service, support, and care.

La idea de crear una biblioteca personalizada para la hermana Rona (asistencia pastoral) del Centro Penitenciario de la Costa Oeste se ha hecho realidad recientemente gracias al esfuerzo y la dedicación tanto del personal como de los reclusos.

Durante los últimos 25 años, la hermana Rona ha desempeñado un papel fundamental en el apoyo a la rehabilitación y la reinserción de los reclusos mientras se preparan para volver a nuestras comunidades. Su compasión, su orientación y su compromiso inquebrantable han influido positivamente en innumerables personas a lo largo de los años.

La hermana Rona es muy respetada tanto por el personal como por los reclusos, y sus contribuciones no pasan desapercibidas. Esta biblioteca es una pequeña muestra de agradecimiento por sus años de servicio dedicado y por la diferencia que sigue marcando cada día.

World Ocean Day is an annual global celebration held on 8 June to raise awareness about the critical role the oceans play in sustaining life on Earth and to promote individual and collective action to protect marine environments.

Our oceans cover 70% of the planet’s surface and play a vital role in sustaining life. From providing oxygen for every second breath we take to feeding billions of people and hosting 80% of the world’s biodiversity, the ocean is essential to our existence.

The official World Oceans Day theme for 2026 is REIMAGINE: Beyond the world we know, a new relationship with our ocean.

El Día Mundial de los Océanos es una celebración mundial que se celebra cada año el 8 de junio con el fin de concienciar sobre el papel fundamental que desempeñan los océanos en el mantenimiento de la vida en la Tierra y de promover acciones individuales y colectivas para proteger los entornos marinos.

Nuestros océanos cubren el 70 % de la superficie del planeta y desempeñan un papel vital en el mantenimiento de la vida. Desde proporcionar el oxígeno para cada segundo respiro que tomamos hasta alimentar a miles de millones de personas y albergar el 80 % de la biodiversidad mundial, el océano es esencial para nuestra existencia.

El tema oficial del Día Mundial de los Océanos para 2026 es REIMAGINAR: Más allá del mundo que conocemos, una nueva relación con nuestro océano.
