Join Us in Prayer for the Synod on Synodality

As we move through this month, let us hold in prayer all who are participating in the Synod in Rome. This is a unique and special moment in the history and life of our Church and there are many different hopes, fears and expectations for its outcome.

It is crucial that we pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit upon each Synod participant and upon the body as a whole. As Pope Francis reminded us “Without prayer, there will be no synod.”

A lo largo de este mes, acojamos en la oración a todos los que participan en el Sínodo de Roma. Se trata de un momento único y especial en la historia y en la vida de nuestra Iglesia, y hay muchas esperanzas, temores y expectativas sobre su resultado.

Es crucial que recemos por la guía del Espíritu Santo sobre cada participante en el Sínodo y sobre el cuerpo en su conjunto. Como nos recordó el Papa Francisco “Sin oración, no habrá sínodo”.

“Laudate Deum”: Pope Francis’ Message on the Climate Crisis

The Season of Creation has ended but the need for prayer, reflection and practical action on the environment continues.

In Laudate Deum, released today “to all people of good will”, Pope Francis shares his heartfelt concerns about the care needed for our common home. In the eight years since the publication of Laudato Si’ in 2015, the Pope says, “I have realized that our responses have not been adequate, while the world in which we live is collapsing and may be nearing the breaking point.” He continues, “the impact of climate change will increasingly prejudice the lives and families of many persons. We will feel its effects in the areas of healthcare, sources of employment, access to resources, housing, forced migrations, etc.”

In six chapters and 73 paragraphs the Pope points to the signs and human causes of climate change (ch. 1), stresses nature is a gift, not  to be exploited (ch. 2), adresses the weaknesses of international politics (ch. 3),describes the various climate conferences held to date (ch. 4) looks ahead to COP28  in November 2023 (ch. 5) and, reminding  his readers that the motivations for this commitment flow from the Christian faith, encourages  all faith groups to “accompany this pilgrimage of reconciliation with the world that is our home and to help make it more beautiful, because that commitment has to do with our personal dignity and highest values. At the same time, I cannot deny that it is necessary to be honest and recognize that the most effective solutions will not come from individual efforts alone, but above all from major political decisions on the national and international level”. El Tiempo de la Creación ha terminado, pero la necesidad de oración, reflexión y acción práctica sobre el medio ambiente continúa.

En Laudato Deum, publicado hoy “a todos los hombres de buena voluntad”, el Papa Francisco comparte su sincera preocupación por el cuidado necesario de nuestra casa común. En los ocho años transcurridos desde la publicación de Laudato Si’ en 2015, dice el Papa, “me he dado cuenta de que nuestras respuestas no han sido adecuadas, mientras que el mundo en el que vivimos se derrumba y puede estar cerca del punto de ruptura.” Y continúa: “el impacto del cambio climático perjudicará cada vez más la vida y la familia de muchas personas. Sentiremos sus efectos en los ámbitos de la asistencia sanitaria, las fuentes de empleo, el acceso a los recursos, la vivienda, las migraciones forzosas, etc.”

En seis capítulos y 73 párrafos, el Papa señala los signos y las causas humanas del cambio climático (cap. 1), subraya que la naturaleza es un don que no debe ser explotado (cap. 2), aborda las debilidades de la política internacional (cap. 3), describe las diversas conferencias sobre el clima celebradas hasta la fecha (cap. 4), mira hacia la COP28 de noviembre de 2023 (cap. 5) y, recordando a sus lectores que las motivaciones de este compromiso emanan de la fe cristiana, anima a todos los grupos religiosos a “acompañar esta peregrinación de reconciliación con el mundo que es nuestra casa y ayudar a hacerlo más hermoso”. 5) y, recordando a sus lectores que las motivaciones de este compromiso emanan de la fe cristiana, anima a todos los grupos confesionales a “acompañar esta peregrinación de reconciliación con el mundo que es nuestra casa y contribuir a hacerlo más bello, porque ese compromiso tiene que ver con nuestra dignidad personal y nuestros valores más elevados”. Watch Launch of “Laudate Deum” on 4 October

On 4 October, the feast day of St Francis and conclusion of the Season of Creation, Pope Francis will release Laudate Deum meaning “Praise God”, an ecology document intended to follow up on his 2015 encyclical, Laudato Si’, On Care for Our Common Home.

Laudate Deum is an apostolic exhortation. As the category suggests, these are papal addresses urging consideration of a particular spiritual matter or activity, in this case the climate crisis. In the 8 years since Laudato Si’ was published, climate change has accelerated, evident in  record temperatures, Arctic-Antarctic meltdown, extreme droughts, storms, wildfires, loss of life and damage.

The launch of Laudate Deum will be live-streamed from Rome at 3:30pm Newfoundland time on 4 October.

Join with us in Following the Events of the Synod

Throughout October,  delegates representing bishops, priests, religious and lay people from around the world are meeting in Rome to discuss issues of vital importance to the Catholic Church.

Sr Elizabeth Davis is among the delegates. We have previously shared news of Elizabeth’s appointment representing  UISG and that of another Mercy sister, Sr Angela Mary Perez who is from Guam and is representing Oceania.

The topics for discussion include women deacons, priestly celibacy and LGBTQ outreach, which surfaced as priorities during the listening sessions held in preparation for the Assembly.

An ecumenical prayer service to entrust the work of the October session of the Synod to God took place in St. Peter’s Square on September 30. At the invitation of Pope Francis, Father Timothy Radcliffe op is leading a three-day retreat for all participants from 1-3 October. Sessions commence on 4 October, the feast day of St Francis and which marks the conclusion of the Season of Creation.

Durante todo el mes de octubre, delegados de obispos, sacerdotes, religiosos y laicos de todo el mundo se reúnen en Roma para debatir cuestiones de vital importancia para la Iglesia católica.

La Hna. Elizabeth Davis se encuentra entre los delegados. Anteriormente hemos compartido la noticia del nombramiento de Elizabeth en representación de la UISG y el de otra hermana de la Misericordia, la Hna. Ángela María Pérez, que es de Guam y representa a Oceanía.

Los temas de debate incluyen las mujeres diáconos, el celibato sacerdotal y el alcance LGBTQ, que surgieron como prioridades durante las sesiones de escucha celebradas en preparación de la Asamblea.

El 30 de septiembre tuvo lugar en la Plaza de San Pedro un servicio ecuménico de oración para confiar a Dios el trabajo de la sesión de octubre del Sínodo. Por invitación del Papa Francisco, el padre Timothy Radcliffe OP dirige un retiro de tres días para todos los participantes, del 1 al 3 de octubre. Las sesiones comienzan el 4 de octubre, fiesta de San Francisco y que marca la conclusión del Tiempo de la Creación.

The third Conversation, a 3-part series of input, discussion and sharing on the three topics related to the October 2023 Synod Assembly — Communion, Mission and Participation— was held online on Friday September 29, 2023 from 9:30- 11:30 am Newfoundland time.

The UISG  (International Union Superiors General) and USG (Union of Superiors General) Delegates for the Synod Assembly were invited to form a panel to offer their reflections  on their experiences and learnings in religious life as they relate to the third major area of synodal focus, Participation.

La tercera de una serie de 3 partes de aportaciones, debates e intercambios sobre los tres temas relacionados con la Asamblea del Sínodo de octubre de 2023 -Comunión, Misión y Participación- se celebró en línea el viernes 29 de septiembre de 2023 de 9:30 a 11:30 am hora de Terranova.

Las Delegadas de la UISG (Unión Internacional de Superioras Generales) y de la USG (Unión de Superioras Generales) para la Asamblea Sinodal han sido invitadas a formar un panel para ofrecer sus reflexiones sobre sus experiencias y aprendizajes en la vida religiosa en relación con la tercera gran área de enfoque sinodal, la Participación.

Blessing of Sr Elizabeth Davis as she attends the Synod in Rome

Mercy Day 2023 was more special in St. John’s, NL, as many Sisters of Mercy gathered with parishioners in our Basilica Cathedral to witness a special blessing for Sister Elizabeth Davis as she travels to the Bishops’ Synod in Rome in October 2023.  

At the regular 11:00 a.m. Sunday Liturgy, Pastor Father Cecil Critch welcomed all especially the many Sisters of Mercy and their Associates on Mercy Day, the day in 1827 when Catherine McAuley opened the House of Mercy in Dublin, Ireland.

Congregational Leader Sister Diane Smyth spoke to the parishioners reminding all of the meaning of the Synod and the importance of the time of preparation through prayer and discussions that we, the voice of the people of God, have given to this matter.  She spoke of the significance of this Synod where for the first time not only Bishops will be attending but lay people and those of other faiths who will be voting members.  She repeated Pope Francis’ words of the need for “closeness, compassion and tender love” as we journey together.  Sister Diane congratulated Sister Elizabeth on being invited to participate in the Synod, one of only ten UISG and USG members (five women and five men) to be invited as part of the 21% voters who are not Bishops.  She wished her well and asked God’s blessing on her to speak passionately on our behalf….

El Día de la Misericordia 2023 fue más especial en St. John’s, NL, ya que muchas Hermanas de la Misericordia se reunieron con los feligreses en nuestra Catedral Basílica para presenciar una bendición especial para la Hermana Elizabeth Davis en su viaje al Sínodo de los Obispos en Roma en octubre de 2023.

En la Liturgia dominical regular de las 11:00 a.m., el Párroco Padre Cecil Critch dio la bienvenida a todos especialmente a las muchas Hermanas de la Misericordia y sus Asociados en el Día de la Misericordia, el día en 1827 cuando Catalina McAuley abrió la Casa de la Misericordia en Dublín, Irlanda.

La Líder de la Congregación, Hermana Diane Smyth, habló a los feligreses recordando a todos el significado del Sínodo y la importancia del tiempo de preparación a través de la oración y las discusiones que nosotros, la voz del pueblo de Dios, hemos dado a este asunto. Habló del significado de este Sínodo en el que, por primera vez, no sólo asistirán obispos, sino también laicos y personas de otras religiones, que serán miembros con derecho a voto. Repitió las palabras del Papa Francisco sobre la necesidad de “cercanía, compasión y tierno amor” en nuestro camino juntos. La hermana Diane felicitó a la hermana Elizabeth por haber sido invitada a participar en el Sínodo, una de los diez canadienses (cinco mujeres y cinco hombres) que han sido invitados como parte del 21% de votantes que no son obispos. Le deseó lo mejor y pidió la bendición de Dios para que hable con pasión en nuestro nombre….

World Day of Migrants and Refugees, 24 September

The Church has been celebrating World Day of Migrants and Refugees since 1914 as a way to express concern for and solidarity with the many vulnerable people on the move.

This year Pope Francis has chosen “Free to choose whether to migrate or to stay” as the focus for this day. In so doing, the Pope is proposing a renewed reflection on the right of people to be able to remain in their own land in peace and dignity – in other words, the right not to migrate. While this right precedes and is broader than the right to migrate, it is not yet enshrined in international law.

Let us pray for people who are forced to leave their homeland because of war, tyranny, poverty or a host of other reasons – that they find safe haven and welcoming hearts in new lands. We pray also that lawmakers around the world will find ways to have the right “not to migrate” codified into law.

La Iglesia celebra la Jornada Mundial del Emigrante y del Refugiado desde 1914 para expresar su preocupación y solidaridad con las numerosas personas vulnerables que se desplazan.

Este año, el Papa Francisco ha elegido “Libres para elegir entre emigrar o quedarse” como tema central de esta jornada. Con ello, el Papa propone una reflexión renovada sobre el derecho de las personas a poder permanecer en su propia tierra en paz y dignidad, es decir, el derecho a no emigrar. Aunque este derecho precede y es más amplio que el derecho a emigrar, todavía no está consagrado en el derecho internacional.

Recemos por las personas que se ven obligadas a abandonar su patria a causa de la guerra, la tiranía, la pobreza u otras muchas razones, para que encuentren refugio seguro y corazones acogedores en nuevas tierras. Recemos también para que los legisladores de todo el mundo encuentren la manera de codificar en la ley el derecho a “no emigrar”.

Sr Elizabeth Davis Leaving for the Synod in Rome

Sr. Elizabeth Davis will be leaving for Rome on September 27 to participate in the Synod to be held there during the month of October.  She will begin with a three day retreat with the other delegates in preparation for the opening of the Synod. 

On Sunday morning, September 24,  Elizabeth will receive “a blessing and sending forth” at the 11:00 a.m Mass at the Basilica.  The Mass will be livestreamed at https://www.thebasilica.net/live/ Archbishop Hundt regrets that he will be away that day;  Fr. Critch will be celebrant.

This is a huge moment in the life of the church, so special that women, laity and other non-clerical persons will participate in a Bishops’ Synod.  Preparation during the past two years for a synod on synodality has provided individuals, parish and other groups around the world an opportunity to speak to each other and to the church.  Their (our) input will form the basis of conversations at the synod and recommendations that will come forward to move the church into the future, that all will walk together in God’s name!

We pray for Elizabeth that she will be filled with the gifts of the Holy Spirit, be prophetic and courageous, that she will have the good health and stamina that she will need, that she will have kind and generous people around her, and that she will speak the truth in love! 

We are very proud that Elizabeth was invited to participate in the Synod, a huge privilege and a huge responsibility.  Thank you, Elizabeth, for your courage and generosity! Be blessed; safe travels.  Know that you are surrounded by our love and care.  We are so proud and grateful.

Sunday is a special day for us as we celebrate “Mercy Day”, our special feast.  As Catherine McAuley placed her new foundation, the House of Mercy (1827 in Dublin), under the patronage of Our Lady of Mercy, we place God’s house of mercy, the universal church and the synod under her protection and guidance!

La Hna. Elizabeth Davis partirá hacia Roma el 27 de septiembre para participar en el Sínodo que se celebrará allí durante el mes de octubre. Comenzará con un retiro de tres días con las demás delegadas para preparar la apertura del Sínodo.

Sus (nuestras) aportaciones formarán la base de las conversaciones en el sínodo y de las recomendaciones que se presentarán para hacer avanzar a la Iglesia hacia el futuro, ¡para que todos caminen juntos en el nombre de Dios!

Rezamos por Elizabeth para que esté llena de los dones del Espíritu Santo, sea profética y valiente, tenga la buena salud y la resistencia que necesitará, cuente con personas amables y generosas a su alrededor y diga la verdad con amor.

Estamos muy orgullosos de que Elizabeth haya sido invitada a participar en el Sínodo, un gran privilegio y una gran responsabilidad. Gracias, Elizabeth, por tu valentía y generosidad. Sea bendecida; buen viaje. Sabed que estáis rodeados de nuestro amor y cariño.Estamos muy orgullosos y agradecidos.

El domingo es un día especial para nosotros, ya que celebramos el “Día de la Misericordia”, nuestra fiesta especial.
