Ellen Mary Joseph Tarahan was born on July 31, 1834, daughter of Mary and Thomas Tarahan of St. John’s. She was the second of the Tarahan sisters to enter the Sisters of Mercy – on August 15, 1855, one month after the death of Sister M. Francis Creedon.  She was received into the novitiate on March 25,1856 by Sister M. Francis’ successor, Sister M. Francis Xavier Bernard and given the name Sister M. Clare Frances.

That same year St. John’s experienced a severe outbreak of cholera and the sisters at Mercy Convent were quick to respond to the disaster. In his book “The Ecclesiastical History of Newfoundland,” Archbishop Howley paid tribute to the ministry of the Sisters of Mercy, as follows:

Then were seen the Sisters of Mercy in their true element. From daylight till dark, and often through the night, they worked indefatigably. No part of the city slums was too dark or too filthy for them. They entered the houses of the plague-stricken when all others had abandoned them, lighting the fires and preparing some humble food, scrubbing and cleaning up the little tenements, dressing and washing the sick, and finally carrying the dead bodies to the coffins, which were placed at the doors on the streets by fearful officials.

Sister M. Clare was professed on April 25,1859 and seven months later she became part of the first foundation from Mercy Convent – St. Michael’s Convent and Orphanage, at Belvedere. In the 1800s many citizens of St. John’s died from severe epidemics that constantly afflicted the city and Immaculate Conception Orphanage at Mercy Convent had become too small to accommodate the growing numbers of children needing admission. Bishop Fleming’s bequest of the Belvedere property to the Sisters of Mercy helped realize the sisters’ dream of a permanent home for the orphan children and the property was quickly made ready for occupancy. On November 16, 1859, thirty orphan girls and four sisters left Mercy Convent for their new home. Sister M. Clare was appointed superior of St. Michael’s in January of 1871.

Little more than a year later, in August of 1872, St. Michael’s experienced a severe outbreak of typhoid fever. Forty-one of the seventy-four children became seriously ill, with several being sent to the Fever Hospital in River Head where two of them died.  Four of the ten sisters living at Belvedere also caught the infection. Sister M. Clare and her sisters worked tirelessly under very difficult circumstances, constantly caring for the sick, washing infected clothing and tending to the regular duties associated with the orphanage.

Sister M. Clare eventually succumbed to the ravages of the fever, dying on November 11, 1872. She was 38 years of age and in her seventeenth year as a Sister of Mercy. She is buried in Belvedere cemetery.

Clare profesó sus votos el 25 de abril de 1859 y siete meses más tarde pasó a formar parte de la primera fundación del Convento de la Misericordia: el Convento y Orfanato de San Miguel, en Belvedere. En el siglo XIX, muchos ciudadanos de St. John’s murieron a causa de las graves epidemias que asolaban constantemente la ciudad, y el Orfanato de la Inmaculada Concepción del Convento de la Misericordia se había quedado pequeño para acoger al creciente número de niños que necesitaban ser admitidos. El legado del obispo Fleming de la propiedad de Belvedere a las Hermanas de la Misericordia ayudó a hacer realidad el sueño de las hermanas de tener un hogar permanente para los niños huérfanos, y la propiedad se preparó rápidamente para su ocupación. El 16 de noviembre de 1859, treinta niñas huérfanas y cuatro hermanas abandonaron el Convento de la Misericordia para trasladarse a su nuevo hogar. La hermana M. Clare fue nombrada superiora de St. Michael’s en enero de 1871.

Poco más de un año después, en agosto de 1872, St. Michael’s sufrió un grave brote de fiebre tifoidea. Cuarenta y uno de los setenta y cuatro niños enfermaron gravemente, y varios fueron enviados al Hospital de Fiebres de River Head, donde dos de ellos fallecieron. Cuatro de las diez hermanas que vivían en Belvedere también contrajeron la infección. La hermana M. Clare y sus hermanas trabajaron incansablemente en circunstancias muy difíciles, cuidando constantemente a los enfermos, lavando la ropa infectada y atendiendo las tareas habituales del orfanato.

La hermana M. Clare finalmente sucumbió a los estragos de la fiebre y falleció el 11 de noviembre de 1872. Tenía 38 años y llevaba diecisiete años como hermana de la Misericordia. Está enterrada en el cementerio de Belvedere.
