The first session of “Reflections on the Synod Assembly 2023” took place on December 6th. The first session offered information about the Synod Assembly as a whole and sharing from each of the UISG Synod Delegates about different aspects of the experience.

Pope Francis has released a video message to appeal for peace in the Holy Land and Ukraine, praying that wars might be resolved through dialogue rather than a mountain of casualties.
The Pope’s video message was accompanied by a press release from the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network, which invites people to take part in a novena.
The “Peacemakers” novena seeks to unite Christians in praying for “peace in the world, and for the Holy Land, Palestine and Israel.”
Prayers and material can be found at the link and on the “Click To Pray” app, known as the Pope’s official prayer app.
El Papa Francisco ha publicado un videomensaje para hacer un llamamiento a la paz en Tierra Santa y Ucrania, rezando para que las guerras se resuelvan mediante el diálogo y no con una montaña de víctimas.
El mensaje de vídeo del Papa iba acompañado de un comunicado de prensa de la Red Mundial de Oración del Papa, que invita a participar en una novena.
La novena “Pacificadores” pretende unir a los cristianos en la oración por “la paz en el mundo, y por Tierra Santa, Palestina e Israel”.

While Phase One of the Synod is over, we need to keep in mind Pope Francis’ call to the whole Church to continue on the synodal journey through prayer, listening to the Spirit and one another and consciously walking together as God’s family, missionary disciples on a shared journey states that “the months leading up to the second session in October 2024 will allow everyone to concretely participate in the dynamism of missionary community indicated by the word Synod.”
The following statement from the letter puts forward the hope and belief of the Synod: “It is precisely the path of synodality which God expects of the Church of the third millennium.”
This multimedia version (below) of the Letter to the People of God from the 16th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops has now been released to complement the Synod participants’ text.
Si bien la primera fase del Sínodo ha terminado, debemos tener presente el llamamiento del Papa Francisco a toda la Iglesia para que continúe el camino sinodal mediante la oración, la escucha del Espíritu y de los demás y el caminar juntos conscientemente como familia de Dios, discípulos misioneros en un camino compartido afirma que “los meses que precederán a la segunda sesión de octubre de 2024 permitirán a todos participar concretamente en el dinamismo de comunidad misionera indicado por la palabra Sínodo”.

This video is a tribute to the 82 women present at the Synod for their contribution as a voting member – 54 of the women – a facilitator or invited expert. Each woman is shown on screen and her voice is heard in a quote from her reflections on the experience.
The two Mercy Sisters at the Synod —Sr Elizabeth Davis (Newfoundland) and Sr Angela Perez (Oceania) — were voting members.
“Pray to the Lord that he will bless me,” Pope Francis says in this video released for November 2023. “Your prayer gives me strength and helps me to discern and to accompany the Church, listening to the Holy Spirit.”

On October 29, 2023, ten women gathered at the Basilica in St. John’s, Newfoundland, to present stories of our biblical ancestors. Through these ten stories from biblical times, researched and written by the actresses themselves, we were called to celebrate women before us, to walk in sacred footprints and to realize new dreams and ambitions.
An atmosphere for personal reflection was created after each story by having the music of two harpists (Vicki Greenslade and Alexa Laurie). The harp is an instrument so representative of biblical times. In creating the reality of their existence, each woman’s attire was enhanced through professionally selected and tailored fabrics most resembling biblical times.
The stories told were Mary, the wife of Clophas (Dianne O’Mara), Sarah (Kim Kelly), Shiphrah the Midwife (Karen Stillman), the Woman at the Well (Sister Mary Rossiter, PBVM), the Women at the Eighth Station (Ann Walsh, Sister Eileen Penney, RSM, and Lesya Danchyshyn), Lydia of the Purple Dye Trade (Patricia Snook-Reid), Miriam, the Sister of Moses (Sister Margie Taylor, RSM) and Ruth (Kay Barrington) who was also the director.
We are drawn to a story with the promise of finding a different world, finding another time and finding ourselves. As the storytelling finished, Sister Margie prayed that there may always be “once upon a time” moments in our lives so that our stories can continue for generations to come, as ones filled with the biblical threads of courage, faith, love and forgiveness.
El 29 de octubre de 2023, diez mujeres se reunieron en la Basílica de San Juan de Terranova para presentar historias de nuestras antepasadas bíblicas. A través de estas diez historias de tiempos bíblicos, investigadas y escritas por las propias actrices, fuimos llamadas a celebrar a las mujeres que nos precedieron, a caminar sobre huellas sagradas y a realizar nuevos sueños y ambiciones.
Después de cada historia se creó una atmósfera de reflexión personal con la música de dos arpistas (Vicki Greenslade y Alexa Laurie). El arpa es un instrumento tan representativo de los tiempos bíblicos. Para crear la realidad de su existencia, se realzó el atuendo de cada mujer mediante telas seleccionadas y confeccionadas profesionalmente que más se asemejaban a los tiempos bíblicos.
Las historias contadas fueron María, la esposa de Cleofás (Dianne O’Mara), Sara (Kim Kelly), Sifra la Partera (Karen Stillman), la Mujer en el Pozo (Hermana Mary Rossiter, PBVM), las Mujeres en la Octava Estación (Ann Walsh, Hermana Eileen Penney, RSM, y Lesya Danchyshyn), Lydia, la del Tinte Púrpura (Patricia Snook-Reid), Miriam, la Hermana de Moisés (Hermana Margie Taylor, RSM) y Ruth (Kay Barrington) que también fue la directora.
Nos sentimos atraídos por una historia con la promesa de encontrar un mundo diferente, encontrar otro tiempo y encontrarnos a nosotros mismos. Al final de la narración, la Hermana Margie rezó para que siempre haya momentos “érase una vez” en nuestras vidas, de modo que nuestras historias puedan continuar para las generaciones venideras, llenas de los hilos bíblicos del valor, la fe, el amor y el perdón.
There are two Mercy Sister delegates at the Synod Assembly: Sister Elizabeth Davis, a representative of UISG, and Sister Angela Perez from Guam who is a representative of Oceania.
Sister Elizabeth shared her hopes for the Synod Assembly when invited to participate in a panel offering reflections on experiences and learnings in religious life as they relate to the third major area of synodal focus, Participation.

“What I’m witnessing is a different leadership style, like servant leadership style, where we’re all gathered at the table and participating, contributing. The voices at my table are the voice of a young person, a laywoman, and in my case, an older woman, a religious, and then the others are bishops, all together at the table sharing,” …
