Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Lenten season, this year falls on March 5.
In the words of Sister Joan Chittister:
The voice of Lent is the cry to become
new again, to live on newly
no matter what life has been like until now
and to live fully.
It is even more than that.
It is the promise of mercy, the guarantee of new life.
The theme of Pope Francis’ Message for Lent in this Jubilee year is “Let us journey together in hope”.
“This Lent”, the Pope says, ” God is asking us to examine whether in our lives, in our families, in the places where we work and spend our time, we are capable of walking together with others, listening to them, resisting the temptation to become self-absorbed and to think only of our own needs.” We are to ask ourselves “whether we show ourselves welcoming, with concrete gestures, to those both near and far. Whether we make others feel a part of the community or keep them at a distance.”

La voz de la Cuaresma es el grito para volvernos
nuevo, para vivir de nuevo
no importa cómo haya sido la vida hasta ahora
y vivir plenamente.
Es incluso más que eso.
Es la promesa de la misericordia, la garantía de una vida nueva.
El tema del Mensaje del Papa Francisco para la Cuaresma de este año jubilar es «Caminemos juntos en la esperanza».
«En esta Cuaresma», dice el Papa, »Dios nos pide que examinemos si en nuestras vidas, en nuestras familias, en los lugares donde trabajamos y pasamos nuestro tiempo, somos capaces de caminar junto a los demás, escuchándolos, resistiendo a la tentación de ensimismarnos y pensar sólo en nuestras propias necesidades.» Debemos preguntarnos «si nos mostramos acogedores, con gestos concretos, con los que están cerca y los que están lejos. Si hacemos que los demás se sientan parte de la comunidad o los mantenemos a distancia».
