On Sunday, June 30, Sister Diane and Madonna were invited to attend an event at Government House, the awarding of the “Newfoundland and Labrador Confederation 75th Anniversary Medal 1949 – 2024” to 8 individuals who have made a significant contribution to the province during these past 75 years.

It was a lovely event, marked by a certain amount of ceremony, yet simple enough to be enjoyable and engaging.
The event began with the awarding of the medals by the Lieutenant Governor, The Honourable Joan Marie Aylward, and Premier Andrew Furey, with two recipients being residents of The Residence at Littledale – Sister Elizabeth Davis and Mr. Richard Cashin (who could not be present but was represented by his daughter). One other recipient, John Pauls, is a centenarian and received a standing ovation.
In congratulating the recipients, Premier Furey noted that “Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are a special kind – embodying hospitality, generosity and unity. It was a privilege to recognize the contributions made by these inspiring individuals.”
The celebration continued with a reception in an adjoining room where refreshments and delicious treats were served; beautiful musical selections by a pianist provided an atmosphere of entertainment. It was also a time when guests mingled with each other, met and greeted recipients of the Award, renewed acquaintances, and engaged in photo opportunities.
Following the reception, a simple tree-planting ceremony was held on the grounds of Government House in honour of the occasion. Even though there was a touch of rain, it did not dampen spirits or the sense of celebration. Circling the guests and keeping a close eye on everything and everybody were RNC horses Harvey, Castle and Dobbin, as well as their riders, all of whom seemed to be enjoying the event and seemed so pleased to be invited.
We congratulate Elizabeth on being selected for this honor and for the recognition of her leadership and contribution to the governance and life of residents and institutions in this province. We appreciate and are grateful for her commitment to the social and health care of the province’s population and beyond, especially as related to the most vulnerable of our population.

El domingo 30 de junio, la Hermana Diane y Madonna fueron invitadas a asistir a un acto en la Casa de Gobierno, la entrega de la “Medalla del 75 aniversario de la Confederación de Terranova y Labrador 1949 – 2024” a 8 personas que han hecho una contribución significativa a la provincia durante estos últimos 75 años.
Fue un acto entrañable, marcado por un cierto ceremonial, pero lo suficientemente sencillo como para resultar agradable y atractivo.
El acto comenzó con la entrega de las medallas por parte de la Vicegobernadora, Joan Marie Aylward, y el Primer Ministro Andrew Furey. Dos de los galardonados eran residentes de la Residencia de Littledale: la Hermana Elizabeth Davis y el Sr. Richard Cashin (que no pudo asistir pero estuvo representado por su hija). Otro de los galardonados, John Pauls, es centenario y recibió una gran ovación.
Al felicitar a los galardonados, el Primer Ministro Furey señaló que “los habitantes de Terranova y Labrador son especiales: personifican la hospitalidad, la generosidad y la unidad. Ha sido un privilegio reconocer las contribuciones de estas personas inspiradoras”.
La celebración continuó con una recepción en una sala contigua donde se sirvieron refrescos y deliciosos manjares; hermosas selecciones musicales a cargo de un pianista proporcionaron un ambiente de entretenimiento. Fue también el momento en que los invitados se mezclaron entre sí, conocieron y saludaron a los galardonados, renovaron amistades y se hicieron fotos.
Tras la recepción, se celebró una sencilla ceremonia de plantación de árboles en los terrenos de la Casa de Gobierno en honor de la ocasión. Aunque llovió un poco, no empañó los ánimos ni la sensación de celebración. Los caballos del RNC Harvey, Castle y Dobbin, así como sus jinetes, daban vueltas alrededor de los invitados y vigilaban de cerca todo y a todos, y todos parecían estar disfrutando del acontecimiento y encantados de haber sido invitados.
Felicitamos a Elizabeth por haber sido seleccionada para este honor y por el reconocimiento de su liderazgo y contribución al gobierno y a la vida de los residentes e instituciones de esta provincia. Apreciamos y agradecemos su compromiso con la atención sanitaria de la población de la provincia y más allá, especialmente en lo relacionado con los más vulnerables de nuestra población.
