Ministries
The Congregational Directional Statement gives the context and the direction for mission and ministry for
the Sisters of Mercy of Newfoundland in today's world. This statement calls each member of the Congregation to collaborate
with others in:
holding in trust the sacredness of all creation
reaching out in compassion and service to the poor and oppressed of our society, especially women
confronting injustices in our Church and society
alleviating the root causes of poverty, oppression and hopelessness.
Underlying this call is the desire and the commitment to live Mercy and Justice more intensely as we carry out the mission of Jesus.
We commit ourselves, in collaboration with others, to focus our resources and energy towards examining, challenging and healing injustice and opression especially as experienced by young, middle-aged and older women in our Congregation, Church and Society.
We are found in ministry...
with children, youth, adults, aged, families
with the sick, the poor, the marginalized
in education, health care, counseling, pastoral care, facilitation, administration, pastoral visiting, parish and diocesan ministry
in literacy and rehabilitation programs, women's centres, social justice work, retreat centres, places of hospitality and respite, support groups
in faith education and development, spiritual direction and other areas of spiritual accompaniment
with our own sick and elderly sisters and with our associates
with immigrants, the hearing impaired, people with HIV/AIDS, prisoners and ex-offenders and with others cast aside or left behind by society
in internal ministries at the service of our local communities and/or the whole Congregation
in institutions and in the wider community and Church
in urban and rural settings and in isolated areas
in Newfoundland and Labrador, Peru, Quebec, Ontario, Florida, Washington and Ireland.
